In the past, people used oral traditions, writing, painting, photography and other methods to understand landscapes they had never seen before. They filled the unknown spaces with beautiful and hopeful imaginations.
The emergence of social media today has created various landscapes. Among them are many images taken with filters and the gesture of “scrolling” the phone screen with your finger is also a unique way of viewing.
The landscape in the work is formed by facial tracking technology. People like to find their best angle in front of the camera (such as selfies) and selectively expose themselves through selfie sharing. This is one of the ways people connect with others through social media today.
Hiding oneself and merging with the landscape to share with you, the life landscape you see is perfect, and there is little room for imagination left. Only an overly beautified life illusion remains, which is a common phenomenon in contemporary society.
Macau has a unique Chinese and Western culture; Portuguese tiles are not only a feature of Macau but also one of intangible cultural heritage. The landscape painting presented in the Portuguese tile style is combined with new media technology to expand the traditional hand-painted method from past hand-painted to today’s facial tracking technology. It uses technology to expand other parts of the body to experiment with painting possibilities.
The Portuguese tile patterns on both sides of the work will change with facial movements, while the middle landscape painting will form a seascape when a participant's face moves and a mountain scene when it is still.
